Trigram Robot SUMO é conduzido em um formato de equipe, com cada equipe composta por 2 alunos participantes e 1-2 professores de coaching. Existem duas categorias: ensino fundamental e ensino médio. Os alunos participantes devem estar matriculados no ensino fundamental ou médio no dia da competição. A arena de competição é uma plataforma circular com diâmetro de 2,8 metros. A plataforma está a aproximadamente 35 centímetros acima do solo, e a área de partida do robô é uma forma de trapézio localizada a 50 centímetros de distância da borda. A área dentro da linha de preparação até a borda da plataforma é a área de partida para os robôs, com os robôs de cada equipe colocados opostos uns aos outros nessa área.
